New Year's Day football
|
Hope you made it safely into 2022. Just one of today’s games lost to Covid at the time of writing.
ARSENAL vs MANCHESTER CITY (1230) A real test of the depth of Arsenal’s resurgence, and one that City will relish. It’s hard to see Arsenal getting anything but a good hiding from this. Blame Covid. Away win.
LEICESTER CITY vs NORWICH CITY Postponed – Covid
WATFORD vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (1500) Chastened by their mauling at home on Tuesday, Watford should now be more focussed and determined to start putting things right. Which is about as far as the optimism goes, because they’re a disorganised rabble that could find itself in the bottom three by the end of the weekend. Pity, really. Away win.
CRYSTAL PALACE vs WEST HAM UNITED (1730) It’s two years to the day since David Moyes returned to the club and there probably isn’t one honest person reading this who anticipated what these years would bring. This evening will also mark Declan Rice’s 150th game for West Ham. Palace have been a bit of a bogey side of late – at least in terms of late equalisers and other irritations – and their recent form is superior to ours. Nevertheless, the Watford game marked the end of a disappointing run and there was something about the performance that seemed to say, ‘Don’t worry, the last few games were just a blip and normal service has now resumed.’ This has the makings of a good, competitive game, and one that we should win. Away win.
**SUNDAY**
BRENTFORD vs ASTON VILLA (1400) Brentford continue to surprise and at the season’s half way point they have accumulated more than 50% of the points likely to ensure survival. Stevie G‘s arrival at Villa Park has lifted Villa, although they remain just two points and two places above their hosts. An intriguing fixture that could go any way. Draw.
EVERTON vs BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION (1400) Everton have had a rough run of form that’s seen them drop to the mini-league just above the drop zone. Which is where you’re normally expect to find Brighton, who remain disciplined and annoying opponents. The Seagulls have never won at Goodison. Today’s a chance to put that right, but you feel that the Toffees should have enough in their tank to withstand any such onslaught. Draw.
LEEDS UNITED vs BURNLEY (1400) A six-pointer, probably, and a chance to get a feel for our next two opponents. There’s an argument that says Leeds have been unlucky this season. Time to put that right. Home win.
SOUTHAMPTON vs NEWCASTLE UNITED (1400) Postponed – Covid.
CHELSEA vs LIVERPOOL (1630) The German connection, the Dortmund connection. A cracking game in store here that will mean much to both managers. Should be a good watch. Draw.
**MONDAY**
MANCHESTER UNITED vs WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS (1730) Wolves have been pleasingly parsimonious in defence – but also in attack. Man U will be far too strong for them this evening. Won’t they? Home win.

Great result and 4th spot is def up for grabs. Have we got the bollocks to take it? Probably not, but it's not an unrealistic target, especially if we bring new bodies in this month.

I enjoy Man U losing almost as much as I do as us winning. Horrible club with plastic fans.

Tuchel and Klopp said Rangnick was some kind of football god, not seeing a lot of evidence of that so far.

I don’t get why Van Den Beek isn’t getting any game time either. Struggling for quality in the middle, and he’s not getting a look in ahead of the three cloggers they keep playing (McTominay, Matić and Fred for the avoidance of doubt).
He’s looked decent in the few minutes I’ve seen him play - I don’t watch them regularly of course, but it’s bizarre. They’re basically the kid who got all the toys at Christmas but don’t know how to use them.

Lingard has to be on the move Obviously they think they have to play £75m Sancho & he served up 75 mins of dismal dithering. Brought Rashford on and he was worse. Greenwood was one of their better players but was sacrificed for Fernandes (not sure why he didnt start given he missed the last game through suspension). And then when it got desperate Ralfie Rangneck brought on someone called Anthony eLANGA.
And as LANGA always says on a Monday night .... Wake up and smell the coffee , Jesse SON

You’re not wrong, it was a smart finish and if it was Ronaldo or Saint Rashford they would have praised the technique of finding the corner!

Great result - Man Utd looked utter shit for most of the game too.
Back in the studio, from David Jones;
“Did Moutinho mean to place it there? Looks like he scuffed it a bit”
They just can’t help themselves, great strike and they come up with shit like that. And then Ince follows up with “if he hit it better he wouldn’t have scored”.
Absolute clowns (I know Ince played for Wolves too but what a cunt).

Well, THAT wasn't in the Media/PL/ESL scriptwriters' plan.
We've got Norwich next, they've got Aston Villa; this could be a defining month.

Man U looked very average. A bit of the play when B Fernandes came on but are miles away from the teams above them. Cant believe they didnt push Mike Dean further forward in the second half

varane's role in the Man Utd defence seems to be applauding Luke Shaw after he makes a last ditch interception to deny Jiminez after Varane has completely lost him.
Wolves deservedly take the lead. 81mins Moutinho

As the commentators mentioned thought the Liverpool keeper looked very calm and composed for a youngster in a big game. Can understand why he is ahead of Crazy Adrian. Pleased that Adrian is still draining wages out of them as 3rd keeper though
Phil Jones starting for Man U for the first time in 2 years. Lingard & Van der Beek STILL watching on from the bench

Everton are an absolute mess and you can't see how it's going to get any better anytime soon. They are restricted with transfers due to FFP, apparently, they just got rid of their DoF who was mainly responsible for wasting 500 mil on shit, and they have a manager who the fans don't want, and are 15th in the table, and you would assume they would be very reluctant to now sack the waiter which would cost a fortune, then start over again with no DoF or manager. It's great.
